Pre-School

We offer preschool classes in tap and ballet/ jazz. Children are divided into two age groups – 3-4 years old and 5 years old.

To lessen the intimidation of signing up for an entire year, pre-school students may sign up for our fall term from September to December or for our spring term from January to June. (Yes, the spring term is slightly longer than the fall term. We have found it much easier to begin new classes immediately after the Christmas break rather than waiting until February).

Students in the fall term may participate in our Christmas community shows.
Students in the spring term may participate in our year-end show.  Costumes will be required for all stage performances. We have a limited supply of costumes in stock that students may borrow for performances. In the event that we can not supply you with a costume, you will need to purchase one at a minimal cost.

Intensive Studies Program

The Intensive Studies program is the right choice for you if:

  • Your primary interest in dance training at this point is to be able to participate in competitive performances.
  • Your primary desire for wanting to compete is to work in a team atmosphere, in order to represent P&B Dance Unlimited as a positive and disciplined group member.
  • You have an interest in a career in the performing arts and you can see the value in gaining stage experience as a member of a competitive team.

Commitment

  • You must be able and prepared to commit a minimum of 3 hours of training to each discipline you choose to study.
  • Please understand that it is not unusual for competitive students to devote as many as

6-10 hours per week to their training.

  • Dancing must be your primary extracurricular activity and you should be prepared to lend it priority in cases of conflict with other activities.
  •

Competition Class Requirements

Students must be taking the technique class that corresponds to their competitive group. If a student is de-registered from their technique class due to absenteeism, they will be immediately de-registered from their group choreography as well.

Students competing in tap and jazz must be registered and working toward examinations in the Al Gilbert Graded Tap & Jazz syllabus.

Attendance

Attendance will be crucial to the decision of whether or not a student is allowed to continue in their competitive choreography and within the program itself. Students are allowed 2 absences per class per term. Once the student has reached the two-absence maximum in a particular class, they will receive official notification. Should the student miss that class again in the remainder of the term, they must participate and pay for make up classes, or take part and pay for another technique class chosen by the Director. Failure to make up classes, or take extra technique classes will result in de-registration from that class.

Performance Opportunities

It is expected that dancers in the Intensive Studies program will perform in three-four competitions each season. We will most certainly be participating in Peak Invitational and at least one Dance Power. All students in the Intensive Students program our invited to perform in our year-end show in June.

Students in the Intensive Studies program will also be asked to perform in our Christmas season and spring time community shows as well as the Kitsilano Showboat in July. Please make every effort to participate.

A Word about School

The Director of P&B Dance Unlimited does not wholly support the policy of pulling kids out of school to attend competition or rehearsals. For this reason, every effort will be made to select those competitions which occur over the weekend, or schedule within the needs of school-aged children in mind. Please accept our sincere apologies if your child must miss a few hours of school due to a competitive performance. This clearly is not our intent.

Private Instruction

Students will benefit greatly from an increased access to instructors through private training. At any time during a term, students may request 30 or 60 minute sessions with a teacher in order to work on jazz, tap, ballet, or contemporary technique. Private instruction may be used to meet certain requirements for technical
